It allows for the automation of processes that once required human labour, optimizes resources, and drives the development of new technologies. In fields like medicine, AI helps diagnose diseases at early stages, and in education, it simplifies the learning process. On a global scale, artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in the development of smart cities. These are urban areas that use algorithms to analyze traffic, monitor environmental conditions, and optimize energy systems. Toronto is no exception. The city is actively implementing smart technologies that make life for its residents more comfortable and environmentally friendly.

Research Centres and Laboratories in Toronto

Leading universities, research institutes, and laboratories play a key role in the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics in Toronto. In particular, the Vector Institute, established in 2017 with support from the Government of Ontario, is a key leader in the AI field. The institute focuses on implementing advanced methods of data processing, computer vision, and machine learning algorithms.

Geoffrey Hinton, a Turing Award laureate, serves here as the Chief Scientific Advisor. He is even called the “godfather of AI.” Vector collaborates with over 100 companies, supporting innovative projects spanning medicine, finance, transportation, and communications. Additionally, the University of Toronto is home to the Toronto Robotics Institute, which develops next-generation robots. The main focus is on creating autonomous systems that can operate in complex environments. For example, their projects in medical robotics include creating surgical robots for performing highly precise operations. Ryerson University is also an important centre for technology research. Its DMZ (Digital Media Zone) is one of the world’s top business incubators, supporting startups working on projects in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and blockchain. This incubator provides access to labs, funding, and mentorship for entrepreneurs in the high-tech sector.

Toronto is also known for its private research centres working in AI. For instance, Layer 6, founded in 2016, specializes in integrating artificial intelligence into financial services. Its algorithms analyze large volumes of data to improve recommendations and predictions in the financial sphere. Furthermore, Layer 6 actively collaborates with the Vector Institute on various research projects. Another leader is Borealis AI, a research lab founded by RBC (Royal Bank of Canada). Borealis AI develops innovative solutions for natural language processing, risk prediction, and enhancing the performance of financial tools. Their research is focused on applying deep learning in finance and economics. Toronto is also home to the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), which brings together leading scientists to collaborate on global challenges. CIFAR plays a vital role in supporting AI research, particularly through its “Learning in Machines & Brains” program. Another crucial part of Toronto’s tech ecosystem is the MaRS Discovery District, one of the world’s largest urban innovation hubs. MaRS connects researchers, startups, investors, and entrepreneurs, creating a unique ecosystem for technological development. They support advancements in healthcare, clean technologies, financial services, and food innovation, promoting the integration of AI and robotics into everyday life.

Startups

In addition to scientific institutions, Toronto is home to many startups that continue to unlock new possibilities for AI and robotics each year. These companies operate in a wide variety of sectors—including finance, healthcare, energy, transportation, education, agriculture, ecology, and security—because the more industries they embrace, the better and more comfortable life becomes.

Among these projects, Cohere is noteworthy. Launched in 2019 as an artificial intelligence startup, it is now valued at $2.2 billion thanks to $270 million in funding.

Another prime example is Maple, a Canadian startup founded in Toronto in 2015 that provides a platform for remote medical care. It allows patients to communicate with doctors and hold real-time consultations through mobile apps or a web interface. Meanwhile, startups like Edgecom demonstrate how AI can be integrated into everyday life—from automating business processes to data analytics.

The Future of AI

Despite significant progress, the AI industry in Toronto faces several challenges. One is a shortage of highly skilled professionals. Although the city’s universities are actively producing new graduates, the demand for experts in AI and robotics continues to grow. Another challenge is the need for ethical regulation. The use of AI requires strict safety standards, especially in areas where algorithms make critical decisions, such as healthcare or law. However, given the current investments and support for innovative projects, Toronto has every chance to become a world leader in artificial intelligence and robotics. Moreover, thanks to the combination of ambitious startups, cutting-edge university research, and government support, the city has all the necessary conditions for further growth and the global implementation of innovations.

Overall, artificial intelligence and robotics are not only transforming technological industries but also having a significant impact on Toronto’s socio-economic development. As one of the leading countries in innovation, Canada holds an important place on the world map of digital achievements.
